So I gave my trusted neighbourhood mechanic a call, and he came by today (on his day off!) to pick up my bike and trailer it to his shop. What an amazing service. Since the Harley is due for maintenance anyway, I will let him do the regular service, exchange the battery, and take care of the mandatory two-year vehicle inspection. I am also contemplating about getting heated grips installed, which I came to appreciate while traveling through the Maritimes in Canada, and maybe I'll get a quick release windshield, too.
Other than that I have the feeling that the Sportster doesn't need any more extras or upgrades. Or does it? I am open to suggestions.

Waschen ... *duckundweg* ... :-D
ReplyDeletePfifft. Du kommst ja auf Ideen...
Delete"has given up the ghost"????
ReplyDeleteHmmmm.
Zusatzscheinwerfer... gute Idee Markus, danke.
DeleteRoad killed fox ... Da wäschst du deine Hände in Unschuld.
DeleteSeven years from a battery? That's pretty good!
ReplyDeleteI have never thought about it, Dom, but maybe the trickle charger helped prolonging the life span.
DeleteHeated grips, you'll wonder how you did without them.
ReplyDeleteNow you have me worried about the Gladius battery. It is a 2009 that I bought in 2011, but it is still the original 2009 battery.
Not sure how long batteries are supposed to last, Brandy. Up to now I have never given battery failure a second thought. But better keep jumper cables at hand... I know I do from now on...
DeleteBatteries in cars seem to last longer. Maybe the vibration decreases their life. I replaced the battery in the Beemer with an Odyssey AGM battery and that seems to work surprisingly well. Even after sitting uncharged (and disconnected) it still had almost a full charge after sitting for a year. I may consider trying one of the LiFePO4 batteries. I've heard a lot of science presentations over the last couple of years on how well they work even at extreme temperatures.
ReplyDeleteRichard, I will see what's possible to get. I'd like a battery that'll last at least as long as the previous, and I also wonder why car batteries have a way better life span.
DeleteWhat great service Sonja! Regarding heated grips, I'd also recommend investigating heated gloves. Heated grips are good, I've had them on a couple of bikes but always suffered with painful finger tips on cold longer runs. I switched to Gerbing G3 heated gloves with a temperature controller towards the end of last winter and everything stays warm now - very pleased.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and Roland!
Hello Geoff, Happy New Year to you and Jennie, too. I will check into the Gerbings. Thanks for the tip.
DeleteI agree with Geoff - heated gloves 100% better than grips - I have the Gerbings with the hybrid battery packs.
DeleteAh... batteries. Not surprised it kicked the bucket. That's a ripe old age, battery-wise.
ReplyDeleteUpgrades for the Sportster? Heated grips are so fine. Hard luggage?
David, I guess it is indeed. The vote is out on the hard luggage. I worry about the installation issues you've had with the Shadow luggage...
DeleteLeather bags I think would be more acceptable on a Harley anyway. :)
Delete7 years for a battery sounds very good - I didn't wait for mine to die I just said give me a new one at 5 years. My mechanic thought it a waste of money, I thought of it as peace of mind!
ReplyDeletePeace of mind, that's why I will get a new one, too instead of recharging the old one.
DeleteAs far as I know, I’ve never been a pirate. I imagine, though, that an unencumbered and unfarkled ship--besides being more maneuverable in battle on rough seas--would look more badass in all its natural, piratey glory.
ReplyDeleteSo--if I were a pirate, I’d likely leave my ship as naked as possible (of course, I’m not a pirate, so take this with a grain of salt. Maybe sea salt ;) ).
