New Beginnings

The weatherman had promised balmy temperatures for today (factually it was no more than +7°C equaling 45!F). Anyway, I thought I'd take my chances to pick up the bike from my trusted mechanic. After tea and chitchat I bundled up, and left the workshop for the inaugural ride in 2016 on Rover, my fully serviced and technically (DEKRA) approved 2008 Harley Davidson Sportster 883. Mechanically the bike is in shipshape again, the only thing it needed - besides the obligatory two year vehicle approval sticker - was a new battery, so the bill turned out reasonably low.

The first miles on the bike felt awkward to say the least. I have not been on motorised two-wheels for almost three months now. Due to lack of appropriate weather, time and opportunity my last ride was running errands by Vespa on Christmas Eve, and I stopped riding the Sportster even sooner some time in November when the insurance ran out.

I made sure to manoeuvre carefully as there were still some icy patches luring in the shadows, and the cagers' abilities to recognise motorcycles as other road users were in lack of better words: underdeveloped. On the road I encountered a handful of other chilled-through-the-bone looking riders obviously having listened to the same weatherman, and testing the waters. The waving was mutually enthusiastic. The Sportster seemed glad to be on the move again, however, to my own surprise my first seasonal ride left me a bit inane.

After my epic trip through Eastern Canada, I found myself both, satisfied and satiated for a while, and then: yearning for more. You may well say: then just go, and and yes, you are right. Because I have some of the best roads of Europe conveniently laid out at my door step: the Vosges in France, Switzerland and the Alps, with hill and mountain twisties galore. But for me these options come along with a feeling of: been there done that. I don't aspire to repetition. And I have been all over the parts of Europe that tickled my interest, multiple times in fact, and more than often enough in my first motorcycle life in the nineties. Don't get me wrong, I don't say it's boring, I'd just like to express, that I crave for something different.

One of the main reasons bothering me about riding in Europe is the amount of other road users present at all times, while I desire solitude. Something you don't get that much in Europe. I miss the promise of the wide open road, the imagination that the very stretch of blacktop that I am riding on - for a moment - belongs to me, and me alone. In this regard I miss Canada, no let's make that North America. The hint of adventure, the excitement in the eye of the unexpected, the unplanned. The not-knowing where one might end up for the night. Just thinking about it makes my heart beat faster (that or I just got a case of hypertension).

Born and bred in Northern Germany, and likely endowed with a fair amount seafarer blood in my veins, maybe that's a viable explanation: I can't do anything against it. It's simply in my genes. So, let's wait and see where my wanderlust will take me this year...

Neuanfang

The Silence of the Sportster

On turning the ignition all lights came up fine, but once I hit the starter button, the bike made nothing but coughing and clicking noises, then the headlight flickered, and the idiot lights went out, followed by deafening silence. Since connections and cables seemed in good order, I assumed that the seven year old battery (yes, it is still the original one in came with, and it's a 2008 model), has finally given up the ghost.

So I gave my trusted neighbourhood mechanic a call, and he came by today (on his day off!) to pick up my bike and trailer it to his shop. What an amazing service. Since the Harley is due for maintenance anyway, I will let him do the regular service, exchange the battery, and take care of the mandatory two-year vehicle inspection. I am also contemplating about getting heated grips installed, which I came to appreciate while traveling through the Maritimes in Canada, and maybe I'll get a quick release windshield, too.

Other than that I have the feeling that the Sportster doesn't need any more extras or upgrades. Or does it? I am open to suggestions.

Let the Season begin!

It was the first day without rain storms, hail or high winds, so I got to test some new features on my Sportster.

Most of is year's additions have been rather functional: A cradle for my TomTom Rider GPS, a cigarette lighter socket, forward foot controls, small risers for my handle bar, a luggage rack and a black sissy bar (quick snap, and only mounted when on a road trip).

Also, I had black powder coating done on the engine guards, the air filter cover, the headlight cover, and I added black buckshot heat shields to the exhaust pipes. Of course the bike also got its regular maintenance with fluid exchange, and a set of brand new tires. The Sportster is running better than ever. Let it roll!

One final Ride

Unfortunately I had been down with the flu the better part of November, as a matter of fact I am still a bit unwell, however I am functioning, I go to work, and I travel, therefore I can also go for a ride (my doctor would beg to differ).

Insurance is going to expire in the next couple of days, and today was the only option left to deliver my Sportster to its hibernation spot. I waited until noon for the temperature gauge to climb up but it never got past 5°C (41F), so eventually I donned my gear, calculating that three layers should be enough. Well, my Michelin-Man outfit wasn't good enough today. Humidity was high, and I was frozen by the time I arrived at the garage, a mere forty clicks away from home. Thankfully Ursel, the shop manager was already waiting with a hot cuppa tea. Needless to say that I was the only two-wheeled customer today...

The bike will be tucked away until March, that's when insurance is up and running again. In the meantime Dieter, the owner and head mechanic of the garage will take care of the maintenance, a tire change, and some additional cosmetics that should make next year's touring even more comfortable, among others forward controls, a proper luggage rack, and handlebar risers will be mounted. I even consider adding a windscreen, but it has to be quick snap, because I would only want to use it on longer tours involving highways.

Sleep well, my Rover.

Schlaf gut, mein Rover.

W.I.P.

A couple of weeks ago I was digging through my basement in quest for some stuff to sell on Ebay, and came across my old solo seat. Should it stay or should it go?

I pondered awhile over the matter. My Sportster, although fully functioning is a project bike. So I decided to give the seat a second chance, have it reworked and use it just for different looks on my W.I.P. bike.

Here is, what my local car upholsterer did with it. I can't wait to install the refurbished seat. It should match perfectly to my recently procured frame bag.

And here it is installed:

Sporty Anniversary

We met on a rainy summer day in July 2011. You looked different back then, but I could see your inner beauty and potential. It was love on first sight. When we met for the second time I was ready to take you home.

Three years and 10,000 clicks later. It's raining again. A different look, a different garage, a different country, a different continent even. Still very fond of you. You don't look a day older (though you really need a bath). I brought you an anniversary gift, a custom made frame bag from Rarebag.

Happy Anniversary, little big one!

First encounter
Before - After
Prettier than ever.

A Sportster Upgrade and a Test Ride

Thursday I got a call from Hawg Supply that Rover, my 2008 Harley Davidson Sportster 883, was finally ready for pick-up. I had to work late on Friday, so our reunion needed to wait until Saturday. I could hardly wait for the morning to come, when we rode two up on Roland's Vespa to the shop.

The modifications on my bike were merely cosmetic, because unfortunately I got way too quickly to the end of my budget. However, here's the little that had been done:

Kellermann turn signals in front and rear
and
lowered plate holder with Alcatraz rear light

Hollywood handlebar
Adjustable clutch and brake levers and steel braided lines
Black mirrors
Arlen Ness beveled fusion grips
Gaitors

Progressive shocks (430 Series)
and
Arlen Ness beveled fusion foot pegs and shifter peg

The weather was somewhat fair, so I thought a little test little test ride was in order. With Roland on Bella in the lead we took a ferry to cross the Rhine, entered the empty roads of France, and by following the river upstream meandered to Weil am Rhein. It is the most southwesterly town in Germany, where the Swiss, French and German borders meet, and a suburb of Basel, Switzerland.

Here we visited the VITRA design museum. More on this can be found on our Magers-in-Europe blog.

It was a long day, and on its first outing in 2014 my bike collected over 200 km, and part of it on foreign territory even.

Besides Rover getting a slimmer look, the new handlebars and shocks instantly proved its money's worth. Thanks to the angle of the bars the ergonomics have improved a lot by allowing a more relaxed upright sitting position, while the shocks provide a deliciously smooth ride over potholes and bumps. Now we're ready to explore the Black Forest in earnest.

Translation of Ursel's comment: Now, she's really happy to have her Harley back, isn't she?

Rover is getting Surgery

A few weeks ago Rover, my Sportster 883, went to the shop for some minor upgrades. Today I visited in order to deliver my paperwork for a repeat TÜV approval. Why again? you might wonder.

Because in Germany pretty much every single change in the build of the motorcycle will have to be documented in the papers, or else… Imagine getting stopped in a traffic control, and not being able to present a valid operating permit for your vehicle. The PTB (powers that be) will likely consider your bike unsafe for riding, put it out of service immediately to be towed away, and it goes without saying that you'll be getting fined.

Rover meanwhile is in the midst of its cosmetic surgery, and currently stripped to the guts. It was almost heartbreaking to see my bike unprotected and defenseless like this. There is some rewiring to do, and some minor tinkering planned with the front and the rear end. More on this soon… provided that TÜV is going to approve of it.

Winter is Nature's way of telling you...

… to fiddle about with your bike. For the longest time I had this dream of owning an old school motorcycle, something along the line of a 60's or 70's scrambler/street tracker or a cafe racer. Money had been saved, designer websites been studied, catalogues dug through, and a custom bike shop been selected more than eighteen months ago.
My Sportster back in 2011 with accessories
windscreen, engine guards, highway pegs, Sundowner seat, sissy bar,
and front indicators attached to the forks.

But then the move from Canada to Germany came in life's way, and bearing in mind Germany's regulatory requirements for motorized vehicles, I took a raincheck on the realization of this dream, aside from small cosmetics.
My Sportster in 2013 - stripped naked
New accessories in 2012: custom seat, fly screen, hand guards,
and 2013: lamps compliant with EU regulations.

When I found my new partner-in-crime Hawg Supply, the very team who helped Rover, my 2008 Harley Davidson Sportster 883 XL to become street-legal in Germany, it was set. They will help making my dream come true.

What I want you've got
And it might be hard to handle
...
What I've got's full stock of thoughts and dreams that scatter
Then you pull them all together
And how I can't explain
…
You make my dreams come true.
(Lyrics taken from 'You make my dreams come true' - Hall & Oats)

Rover is in the shop now, and farkles are being ordered is I type this (alas, some parts come with a lead-time). Please stay tuned for an update on the transformation coming up soon, and yes, of course it will all be compliant with German TÜV.

Also bleibt neugierig.

Rover resurrected!

Good things come to those who wait, and better things come to those who are patient. I have waited two months and nine days for this to happen. Finally the exception approval for my 2008 Harley Davidson Sportster 883 has been granted by the the Regional Council of the state (Regierungspräsidium Freiburg). Ursel picked up the papers and plate from the licensing department yesterday, and Dieter got the bike ready for the road.

At the end it came down to swapping the head-light to comply with German road standards. Everything else is still original, even the exhaust with its (nasty) emissions. Meanwhile Dieter had given Rover an overdue service including spark plugs and fluid exchange, plus a good bath and polish. Thanks Hawg Supply! The Uebels were genuinely happy for me when they handed me my baby back. Life is good!

Dieter & Ursel Uebel from Hawg Supply posing with my now street-legal Sporty.
 I can't believe it's happening.
 Filling in the good stuff!
YES! After almost a year of downtime. Free again!
And the weather is playing along nicely.
Home at last! The family is complete.

Was lange wärt...

Evolution of a Seat, a Documentary

Janice let me have a look behind the curtain, and shared her production photos with me.

The uncovered seat, with re-design sketched out on the foam.
A lot of this would have to go.
I wondered to what extent the seat could be transformed.
Let the work begin!
Lots of foam already cut off.
Now the seat pan. Before...
... and after surgery.
With the new seat pan shape further foam shaving ensued.
Just a little more...
Getting closer to the end result.
I wanted the typical 70's scrambler style rib stitches with burnt orange thread.
Another custom request that Janice could easily comply with.
Almost there...
The leather got stapled to the seat pan.
A close up...
... and the finished seat.
An amazing job done to full customer satisfaction.
