Winter has come to town early this year. Roads are mostly clear though, because of a fairly efficient working snow removal system.
Der Winter ist diesmal wirklich früh dran. Trotz allem sind die Straßen ziemlich frei, da unser Schneeräumdienst hier gut funktioniert
No matter what the weather, Saturday is hiking day, the forest is calling and it is pretty and quiet. Today we plan on visiting a special Christmas market which is held on a farm on the hills. It is a small but very quaint location.
Aber egal wie das Wetter ist, Samstag ist Wandertag, der Wald ruft und dort ist es wunderschön und ruhig. Heute wollen wir uns zu einem nahe gelegenen Bergbauernhof aufmachen, in dem ein besonderer Weihnachtsmarkt abgehalten wird. Dieser ist zwar klein aber fein.

The market offers regional delicatessen, homemade liquor, wood carvings, candles and many other craftsmanships.
Auf dem Markt werden regionale Delikatessen, selbstgemachte Liköre, Holzschnitzereien, Kerzen und andere Handwerksarbeiten angeboten.

Here is my colleague selling his goods, he is a talented wood carver. And oh look, chocolate truffles, gotta have a few of those.
Ein Kollege von mir ist ein recht begabter Holzschnitzer, von ihm kaufen wir etwas. Oh, schau mal, leckere Schoko-Pralinen, die muss ich auch noch haben.
We enjoy browsing the different booths, have a chat with the locals, try a hot morello cherry punch, and finally turn home with bags full of little trinkets and snacks.
Wir schlendern an den verschiedenen Buden vorbei, bewundern die Auslagen, genehmigen uns einen kleinen Sauerkirsch-Punsch ("...nor einen wänzigen Schlock..."). Wir plaudern mit den Ausstellern und kehren schließlich mit Einkaufstaschen voller Kleinigkeiten und Leckereien nach Hause zurück.
Fairytale scenes, all of 'em, Sonja. Does that market attract many tourists, or is it mostly a locals thing?
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought, too. Ry. Tourists don't usually frequent the smaller Christmas markets as much, it is more of a seasonal get together of the locals, with family members, friends or colleagues visiting.
DeleteNice snowy pics, good support of the local artisans and some exercise....what more could you add right?
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, some of them still live the hard life as farmers, some of them have another profession and do part-time farming on top of their day. Reason enough to support local businesses as much as we can in order for those hard working people to be able to stick around and provide regional produce, Dom.

DeleteSolche kleinen feinen Weihnachtsmärkte vermisse ich, denn hier ist es oft laut und bunt, wenn überhaupt etwas stattfindet. Dafür können wir mit der schnee-schönen Landschaft mithalten. Geniesst es weiterhin und frohe Weihnachtszeit.

Hi Anita, diese kleine Märkte mag ich am liebsten, auch weil wir immer wieder Bekannte, Kollegen und Nachbarn treffen. So viel Schnee wie dieses Jahr hatte es hier schon länger nicht mehr. Fast schon Kanada-Feeling.
DeleteThe snowy trails look great. It would be nice if there was enough snow to ski on but being able to hike is almost as nice. And the market looked pretty cool. I'm going to search for the hot cherry punch.
ReplyDeleteWe are about to enter the ski season, as snow is becoming deep enough, Richard. I actually contemplate getting some snow shoes to keep up with the hiking during winter. The cherry punch was so tasty, we had to take some liquor home ;-)
DeleteLove the small local markets. Like you say, selling crafts is often a means for farmers, retirees, and others to augment meagre incomes, so they are worth supporting, for sure.

DeleteEure Stadt ist ja soooo schoen *find*, und die geschnitzten Sacehn sehr schoen ... Ich glaub, ich plane das naechste Weihnachten wieder in Deutschland ein. Denn von dem Suesskram, Punsch etc fang ich erst gar nicht an *seufz*.
ReplyDeleteUnd hier ist immer noch kein wirklicher Schnee :-(, aber immerhin blauer Himmel und Sonne und nicht Regen und grau wie in Vancouver *lach*.
Ja, es ist ganz nett in unserer Gegend, besonders mit den vielen Wäldern drum herum. Da kommt zumindest im Winter schon mal Kanada-Feeling auf. Bei uns hat es inzwischen fast einen halben Meter Schnee ab 800 Höhenmetern. Damit ist Ski und Rodel gut.
