Some of you might know that our families live in the midwestern part of Germany. It's a four hour drive North from the Black Forest. In order to spend Christmas with our loved ones we left the snowy and mostly sunny mountain range and swapped it for the rainy flat land that is North Rhine Westphalia.
To minimise driving whilst visiting various parts of our families wie had booked a boutique hotel in the city centre of Dusseldorf close to the main station. A long time ago we had worked for a company that used to have their headquarter just across the railway station. Back in the days the station hall was the underbelly of the city, dark, dirty and a bit scary, a platform for drug dealing and other dubious things. Crossing the hall to catch a train back home often felt like running the gauntlet, passing homeless, addicts of all kinds, panhandlers and other poor or shady folks. So, you may imagine how impressed we were, to find a bright building instead, with a tourist information, a grocery store, a Starbucks and two bakeries, a huge book store and several other shops. A security service was also present. Times are changing...
First things first, when in Dusseldorf, one has to go eat in a Japanese restaurant. The city is home to many businesses and business people from Japan, hence, chances are that Asian cuisine is present and fairly authentic. We went to a Sushi restaurant called Na Ni Wa, and it was perfect. From our table we could watch the chefs preparing various dishes in high speed. Very professional.
And after I got to enjoy a Chai Soy Latte and a lactose and gluten free chocolate cake in a hipster cafe called Tenten. The barista wasn't surprised at all and served exactly what I asked for. Gotta love the big cities... in small town cafes it would not be very likely to be served either of the things I ordered.
The highlight of the evening was a visit of the local Christmas Market. It was pretty huge, beautiful and well visited. It was a lot of fun to try out various treats and snacks, and we also found a few little trinkets to carry home.
The time spent with our families was flying by too fast, filled with fun, games and way too much food. All the effort put into weight loss before the holidays was in vain, we certainly regained all of it during the last days, and probably put on a few more pounds.

Trading your winter wonderland for dreary rain initially sounds like a bad deal. But the pictures of the lights and the market plus fabulous food options help offset things. Not to mention the time spent with family and friends.
ReplyDeleteWe had an awesome time together with family and friends indeed, Richard. No regrets ;-)
DeleteGoing to Dusseldorf for Japanese food, didn't see that one coming! Good to hear they've cleaned up the train station area....
ReplyDeleteI can certainly recommend this, Dom. Düsseldorf has many excellent restaurants but Japanese or Persian/Turkish food are worth a special mentioning.
DeleteYour photos are lovely Sonja. I am glad you were able to visit family during the holidays. it looks like a wonderful time. The food looked pretty good too.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and Roland!
We had a great time, Brandy. Happy New Year to you both.
