Twisty and partly slippery (!) roads took us to castle Landeck, which I had previously visited on a solo trip with my Sportster. As it was new terrain to Roland we stopped there for little bit of sightseeing.
It was a most welcomed break, because the exercise of climbing the steep and uneven staircase of the ruin got us warmed up again. Instead of overcast skies, which was what the weather man predicted, we were blessed with a bright blue heaven.
Warmed up again we were ready to continue our journey, and 'asked' TomTom for directions. On our way home the GPS would lead us through bare-branched vineyards.
An ancient looking moss covered stonewall caught my attention. This wall was indeed old, and so were the tombstones behind it. I failed to decipher the inscriptions, but the symbols looked somewhat familiar: This place turned out to be of Jewish origin.
The Jewish cemetery had been founded in the 17th century. Between then and 1941 it became a last resting place for almost three thousand people. About 2,500 head-stones are still preserved, the oldest being from 1701. In it's time it had been the largest cemetery in the South Baden area, and relatively unscathed despite the several wars and quarrels of the last centuries.
All in all we rode 97km (60mls), and spent three hours in fresh air, at temperatures around 5C (41F).
It was a good start into the new riding year!

Auf ein Neues!
Unser erster Vespa-Ausflug in 2014.

I can't believe I'm seeing green earth. Very interesting history on the Jewish cemetery.
ReplyDeleteAnd there you are riding already...or still. Sweet start to 2014.
Already, and still riding, Martha ;-) People start wondering where the snow is, this is unusual but who am I to complain.
DeleteNice ride report....it always feels warmer when the sun is shining doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt does feel warmer, Dom. Even if the temperatures don't tell a difference. It's all about the psychological effect that the sun has on us.
DeleteBeautiful sunshine and a great ride. Nice start to 2014.
ReplyDeleteThat third picture down is my favorite. The colors are really interesting in it.
Really cool that you could find some history on the cemetery and that it is in such good shape.
Thanks Brandy. The internet helped digging up some history on this cemetery. And it's still kept up although no longer used.
DeleteSo much history on every ride. And beautiful scenery, my favorite is also the third photo. The sun is so high in the sky compared to our 3° above the horizon.
ReplyDeleteRichard, as a matter of fact we already see the days getting longer again. When I ponder about living in Alaska… I could probably adapt to the cold but I am not sure about the lack of light…
DeleteA beautiful day. I love the scenery and the ruins. The red and orange scoots at least give the feeling of warmth, even if it's an illusion. Lovely post.
ReplyDeleteSonja I love the first picture ... the little blast of colour from the scooters caught my eye. What a great way to unwrap the new year.
ReplyDeleteLove the cemetery photo and the 3rd one down. Nice, very very nice!
ReplyDeleteFirst ride of 2014......in January......words I've never spoken, but I can dream :)_
ReplyDeleteThanks for the colors and keeping the dreaming alive!
