Beautiful River Danube

All good things must come to an end.

There was no weather improvement at the horizon, and we were only 600 km away from home, so we split the distance in half, and had a look at the map, to see where we would end up for the last night of our journey. I liked the idea of traveling a bit upstream along river Danube (which has its source in the Black Forest). Danube is the continent's second largest river, and flows through nine countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia - not Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova) before emptying into the Black Sea. Nine countries, Black Sea... there is certainly an exotic ring to it.

Neuburg a.d. Donau

We had an uneventful ride, with dark clouds hanging above us but it never rained. However it was cold(ish), with only 13C at times, and spoiled by the Italian sun, we had to put on rain gear at one point for the sake of staying warm.

We were merely in quest for a gas station when I spotted an advertisement for Neuburg, which looked interesting enough to take a detour. We liked this town on the river instantly, and decided to stay here for the final night of our vacation, to have more time and opportunity to look around.

Alas, the first hotel we checked out turned out to be fully booked, however the concierge directed us to another place which was humbly called Die Aussicht - The View. I tell you, it was by far the best accommodation on our trip. The venue is newly renovated and had only opened the week before, and 'the view' was quite the understatement... it's overlooking the beautiful Danube river valley.

The view from the restaurant patio

For Gary (or any rider traveling through this part of Germany): Please do not hesitate to visit... it is located in the old city core, rooms and restaurant are highly recommended, the chef will cater to any of your nutritional needs, breakfast is awesome, manager and staff are fluent in English, and they have underground parking with separate compartments for your two-wheelers.

We freshened up (and it took awhile because we enjoyed the shower with its various options too much), took a quick nap and spent the rest of the day strolling along Danube, and exploring the city. When it dawned we returned to the hotel for an excellent meal on the patio while enjoying the view and the sunset. It was a perfect ending to perfect holidays.

The last stretch was completely uneventful except for the fact the sun came out right on cue with our arrival at home. And after more than 3,300km we arrived home save and sound on our Vespas, Bella and Alonzo, which were running flawlessly over the whole distance, and served us perfectly on this wonderful road trip. The bikes definitely deserved a good portion of TLC now. What an epic ride... Can we do it again, please?

Isn't it nice when you find a gem like Neuburg. That's the nice thing about exploring and taking the slow route. It was nice that you received no rain, even though the clouds were threatening. The diffused light is better for photos.

Doesn't appear that many tourists go there, except tourists with Crocs© who decided to leave their Crocs© behind and walk naturally . . . of course I like the Pink ones

    1. It is an area for culture buffs. There are art, theatre and jazz festivals but the city didn't seem very high on the radar of "normal" tourists. I had never heard of this town before and if it weren't for the ad, we might have missed it.

The crocs all belonged to boaters. I am sure they will pick them up after.

    1. Brandy, it is like Bob said, the slow route will take you places. I wonder how many gems we have missed in Germany alone...
