Culture Clash: The Irish invade the Black Forest

With this year's celebration of St. Patrick's Day the Irish came into small-town Germany. Although culturally unrelated to any German holiday, the Green Day and its tradition is well known over here. Hence people showed up in green attire and green hats and scarfs.

Green became the colour of the night, and traditional Black Forest taverns turned into Irish Pubs, serving Guiness and Kilkenny, Irish Coffee and Whiskey.

And instead of oompah music you could listen to the sound of guitars, banjos, fiddles and harmonicas.

This first Irish Night was very well received in the village, beer and whiskey kept flowing, and you could hear the locals singing folk songs until well after midnight.

  1. Looks like a good time was had by all the Irish-Germans (or is it German-Irish) folks. I suspect that the fact the beer and whiskey kept flowing had a lot to do with how well received the event was. :)

  4. Sounds like a great way to spend the evening.

Depending on the number of Kilkenny, maybe not a great morning after.

    1. We kept our consumption in check, Brandy. No aftermath for us.

  5. That does look like a fun time. I discovered a while ago that it's not a good idea to tell an Irishman you "don't care for Guinness" and prefer Wychwood brews...

    1. Martha, as long as you tell them that you like Kilkenny, you will be good.
