Southbound on the West Trail - Auf dem Westweg Richtung Süden

This is going to be my first solo attempt at a fully geared-up multi-day hike. To put this in perspective, 'solo' is all relative. It's a long weekend, and rest assured trails will be busy with all kinds of weekend warriors, day hikers and mountain bikers.

The plan is to walk the first two legs of the Westweg (West Trail). Two days later I will be joined by my better half for another bonus hiking day in Kaltenbronn. Hiking a distance of seventy kilometres over three days should be enough mileage to find out whether I'm cut out for long-distance hiking. I am looking forward to it.

Founded back in 1900 by the Black Forest Hiking Club, which is responsible for trail scouting, maintenance, and markings to this day, the Westweg is a classic among Germany's long-distance trails. Beginning in Pforzheim it traverses the Black Forest from north to south, leading over Germany's highest and largest middle mountain range. Through the rugged areas of the northern Black Forest highlands down into the lovely Kinzig river valley it eventually passes the European watershed. The path crosses the highest summit of the Black Forest (Feldberg at 1,493m), finally ending in Basel, Switzerland, after a distance of approximately 280 km. Throughout the trail passes a mere twelve villages which - given Germany's population density - makes it the country's most remote hiking trail. If you love the silence and serenity of a forest, this trail is for you.

Roland had originally planned visiting his friend in Sweden but alas, the flight got cancelled due to severe thunder storms. The waiting list was long, so he decided to cancel the trip all along. On the plus side he could give me a ride to the Westweg trailhead in Pforzheim. After an early dinner in the beer garden of the Kupferhammer, a popular rider's, biker's and hiker's destination hubby sent me on my way.

I pass the first of twelve gates, symbolising the twelve legs of of this long-distance trail. Today's distance isn't much worth mentioning, a mere three kilometres across the hill, and along river Nagold to get to a 13th century castle turned youth hostel, Rabeneck (Ravenscourt) in Dillweißenstein.

Contrary to my childhood experiences with youth hostels, the facility is nicely restored. At the reception I flash my YMCA/YHA card to a hostel warden whom to my surprise isn't a grumpy old geezer but a cheerful young lady half my age. The room sleeps four people in two bunkbeds and possesses a clean ensuite bathroom with running hot water. The times, they are a changing.

A room with a view

I have the room to myself and take the opportunity to rearrange the items in my backpack hoping for a better fit and weight distribution on the first real leg of the Westweg.

My backpack contains: cookware, food&water: 4.4kg, sleeping: 2.3kg, clothing: 3,9kg, hygiene, tech stuff and sundry items: 2.8kg plus backpack: 1.8kg. This equals a total pack weight of 15.2kg. Ultralight...NOT.

Ultraleicht geht anders...

  1. 15.2kg works out to 33.5 lbs. 35lbs was the minimum weight for one's rucksack when doing a forced march while in the Army (back when I was young and stupid)...so find yourself a 1.5kb rock to fully enjoy that part of the hiking experience! ;)

I'll be curious to hear how good cell coverage is, and of course looking forward to the pics. I've never stayed in a youth hostel....

    1. Thanks for the suggestion, Dom, but I‘d rather lose some weight (at least on my back).
When in school it was normal for us students to sleep in youth hostels on the annual field trip.

  3. When I read 14.2 kgy reaction was wow, very light. When hiking starting in the eastern Sierras many times you start out with two gallons of water for that first all uphill day. Looking forward to the trip report!

    1. And there I was... so happy with my accomplishment, Thanks for putting things into perspective. As a matter of fact I actually carried too much water. There are so many springs and fountains in the area, plus several inns along the trail catering to hungry and thirsty hikers. At no time I was in peril of malnourishment of any kind.

  4. I’m glad Dom did the conversion. That’s a lot to carry, in my opinion. Screw the rock idea! Nice that water is so plentiful. This is such a fun trial/test for virtual accompaniment!

    1. It was definitely too much weight, Kathy. For long distance I have to get lighter (either me or my backpack...).
