A hint of Christmas - Ein Hauch von Weihnacht'

In the dark season a.k.a. late fall and winter people get creative about how to conveniently overcome that time of the year. At the office we still call it a 'Christmas party' but the only religious aspect going with it is the common belief in getting properly fed and watered. 

Die dunkle Jahreszeit (auch Spätherbst oder Winter genannt) macht die Menschen erfinderisch, was den Zeitvertreib angeht. Im Büro nennen wir es immer noch eine Weihnachtsfeier, aber der einzige religiöse Aspekt ist der Glaube daran, dass wir gut zu essen und viel zu trinken bekommen werden.

Jump cut: The sleepy village of Nordrach. Nestled between dark hills of the Black Forest its existence began almost 900 years ago. And the spirits are very much alive over here. Literally! 

Szenenwechsel in das schläfrige Örtchen Nordrach. Eingezwängt zwischen den dunklen Hügeln des Schwarzwalds begann seine Existenz vor fast 900 Jahren, und hier geht es im doppelten Sinne spirituell zu.
 

On the one hand there is the fairy tale about a monk who committed suicide because he couldn't get the wanted position as an abbot of the nearby monastery, and therefore has to wander around in eternity: The Moospfaff. 

Da ist zunächst der Moospfaff, ein Mönchlein, dass Selbstmord begangen haben soll, nachdem es die gewünschte Position als Abt im nahegelegenen Kloster nicht bekommen hat und seither bis in alle Ewigkeit herumgeistern muss.

On the other side there are the clever Black Forest souls who got creative with mother nature's gifts, turning every plant, nut or fruit into sweets or booze:

Dann haben wir noch die cleveren Schwarzwälder, die es verstanden aus den Gaben von Mutter Natur Schnaps und Likör herzustellen. So wurden aus Pflanzen, Nüssen oder Früchten entweder Spirituosen oder auch Süßes:
 

First stop: The chocolate maker E. Laifer. We got the full tour from how the business started out as a flight of fancy with one praliné, and how it became the regionally famous chocolaterie it is today. And the local spirits are well alive in these creations. I can tell because the tour included a tasting of said chocolates.

Die erste Station auf unserem Betriebsausflug wurde die Pralinenmanufaktur Choco-L. Inhaber E. Laifer wusste lebendig die Erfolgsgeschichte von der Schnapsidee der ersten Pralinen-Kreation bis hin zu dem bekannten Unternehmen von heute zu erzählen. Und die Geister findet man in der Tat auch in den Pralinen, nicht nur, dass eine von ihnen Moospfaff heißt, die kleinen Kunstwerke wurden natürlich mit Spirituosen aus der Region angereichert und verfeinert. Das hat man auch beim Verkosten gemerkt.

Second stop: The Schwarzhof distillery is a typical Black Forest farmhouse. Schnapps and liquor making has been perfected over generations by the Schwarz (meaning Black) family. The Schwarzes already won several awards for their creations. The booze is to the day produced in a tiny hut called Brennhisli (little distillery hut). 

Zweiter Stopp wurde der Schwarzhof, ein typischer Schwarzwaldhof, auf dem die Schnapsbrennerei bereits seit Generationen von der Schwarz-Familie betrieben und perfektioniert wurde. Die Schwarzes haben bereits etliche Preise für ihre flüssigen Kreationen gewonnen. Die spirituellen Getränke werden traditionell immer noch in einer separaten Hütte, Brennhisli genannt, hergestellt.

After the distillery tour we were invited into the main house for a liquor tasting and a typical Black Forest Vesper, a rustic meal with bread, cold cuts and cheese, accompanied by cider. All food and drinks were homemade. The tasting became a true spiritual happening, hence a call for cabs was very much needed after the event.

Nach der Brennhisli-Tour gab es zum Abschluss eine Einladung ins Haupthaus, wo wir noch zu einer Schnapsverkostung und einer originialen Schwarzwald-Vesper mit Brot, Aufschnitt, Käse und Most eingeladen wurden. Alle Getränke und Speisen waren hausgemacht. Die Verkostung der spirituellen Getränke bedurfte anschließend einer Taxifahrt, da niemand mehr in der Lage war, ein Fahrzeug zu führen.
