Temporarily back on two wheels

The regular follower of my ramblings might have noticed the lack of content in the two-wheeled department in the past two months or so. And yes, I haven't been out much on my 2008 Sportster 883 or my Vespa GTS 300 Supersport lately. I was also forced to neglect my Townie beach cruiser and my mountain bike.

Shortly before leaving for Iceland I had to to take care of sudden health issues, and got have surgery, and at that point I wasn't even cleared for the flight. However, I got the green light for traveling a day before departure on the promise to take it easy. A rule which I followed most of the time, except that, in order to regain some fitness, our Icelandic journey involved daily walking, and a bit of light hiking, too.

I am almost as good as new today, alas, for the rest of the year longer motorcycle trips will definitely be out of the question. Last Sunday's scooter outing proved, that there's still some healing to do. So, our next adventure is likely going to be rather on four, and not on two wheels. But like the old adage says: If life gives you lemons... bite into them and suck 'em all out (or something along those lines).

For we are many, not!

It started a few weeks back when the weather was still crappy. Flyers of the annual Let's-Bike-To-Work campaign promoted by one of the major health care insurances were handed out at work. From then onwards I use every possibility to take my Townie for the twelve kilometre round-trip to work. Other colleagues signed up as well, and some were very enthusiastic about it, however, my poor push bike more often than not seems to sit alone in its designated slot. On the plus side, I have found new purpose for my long neglected beach cruiser. And who knows, now we are few but soon we might be many...

Could it be...?

... the beginning of a beautiful friendship between me and Spike the bike? The man was down with a serious case of man flu, and all of a sudden I found myself solo climbing the Black Forest hills behind our house. Equipped with a new geek squad helmet and some additions to the bike (a micro bell, some mud guards, a saddle bag, and a pair of handle bar grips) I almost felt like a pro...

Well, that feeling lasted less than half an hour or so. Then I hit a steep and muddy incline in the wrong gear... a rookie mistake, that almost threw me off the bike and into said sludge. But on the plus side the unplanned stop-over provided me with a nice view, and a photo op.

Back in the valley I revved it a bit and followed the gravel trail on the dyke along the river. I am still amazed about the bike's speed. It is so different from my Townie beach cruiser. Now, if I could only get a little snowfall. I'd really like to try out Spike, the bike under wintery conditions.

Happy New Year!

Frohes Neues Jahr!

Chased by Fog

The previous Sunday afternoon was lovely, the morning fog had gone, and the temperatures had been in the low teens (°C). My pedal powered Townie was that day's weapon of choice.

While riding through the valley it became clear that the fog was never completely gone but lying couching just behind the next hill, getting ready for a new attack.

The air suddenly became humid and cold, the fall colours were fading, and the scenery turned a bit eerie as the white blanket closed in again.

Jurassic encounter

I tried to get away from it but wherever I went, the fog was already there. I was trapped, surrounded by this misty cloak, and getting cold. So, when I came home after a mere twenty km roundtrip I was in serious need of a hot cuppa tea.

Vom Nebel gejagt

Monochrome

With the surprising discovery of winter cycling fun I ventured out the next day to get some more of it. This time glove liners, and a second pair of woollen socks did the trick, and I wasn't at all cold. The sky was of a metallic grey and it was snowing. I was glad for having lowered the pressure in my tires. Although harder to push forward on the black top it seemed to provide me with a fairly good grip in the snow.

The only other cyclist I met during my outing was a spandex covered - I am too sexy for my bike - guy. He almost fell off his fully dressed steed as I passed by. Yes, it might be hard to believe but one doesn't need a mountain-triathlon-supersport-bicycle for snow-riding. As a matter of fact one can actually ride a beach cruiser in street attire in the winter, and aside from this, my Townie is a much better looking motive   ;-)

A cold Ride

Weirdly motivated by bluecat's activities I managed to subdue my inner sloth, and got the Townie out of its shack for the first time this year. Although sunny it had no more than -4°C (25°F). I tried to dress appropriate for the weather but somewhat failed. My hands and feet were cold, and stayed that way until I got home, while the rest of my body became toasty while moving.

One had to watch out for icy patches on the trails, but since I was going at a fairly slow pace - I admit to being completely out of shape - risk of slippage was low.

Ponds and rivers were half frozen, and the higher I climbed the more of the white stuff showed up. After a while I developed a serious desire to wrap my hands around a steaming mug of hot beverage, and called it a day. For next time I am going to bring along a Thermos, and maybe a P/B sandwich for a little winter picknick, but right now, I have a date with my hot water bottle.

Winter-Radeln

Not Hardcore

I haven't been cycling since 1st of November, and I feel bad about it, but my sneezing and coughing prevented me from exercising (ok, it's rather joy riding than exercise). Alas, I lost the little fitness I had built up over summer, and have to start from scratch, in the cold, in the dark, likely in bad weather and with biting cross winds.

Before I procured my Townie I had a long phase on non-cycling, as a matter of fact I used to fiercely dislike the whole pedal powered means of transportation. Meanwhile I actually start to miss these little outings. But will I ever turn into a hardcore cyclist?

Ok, it has its advantages with regards to health and fitness, not to forget the positive impact on the environment, but I will always prefer a motorised two-wheeler over a pedal bike. I do not cycle long distance, or commute or even pedal every day, and sometimes my outings are less than 20 clicks, and under an hour of riding time.
I will never aspire to win or even to participate in a race or a challenge.  I don't like riding uphills. I don't own spandex or other typical cycle gear (except for a helmet), and you will not ever find me wearing it. If I can't cycle in jeans I won't do it. I don't use cycle lingo - but I know that my type of bicycle is called a beach cruiser. I don't speed, and I regularly stop for photo ops and vistas.

Hardcore? Certainly not. But I do consider myself a cyclist nevertheless, because when I'm on my pedal bike I am thoroughly enjoying it, it makes me smile and clears my mind. Also, for some reason, I find pictures like this one I found on the inter web, strangely inspiring:

A cyclist? I am one.

Ride with me, the pedal way

One serious sign of a neglected two-wheeler is low tire pressure. Hence, the spouse, who had lately spent his workdays in Frankfurt, had to make a little detour to the petrol station first, and pump up the tires of his bicycle. Thanks to a newly procured valve adapter it was a matter of a few minutes, and we and the bicycles were ready to roll.

If it weren't for the bare trees, nobody would guess that it's November, and Christmas is closing in. Temperatures were forecasted to climb as high as 24°C (75°F).

Usually we build in a little challenge into our wee cycling trips, however I wasn't at my best, and couldn't manage the steep slope this time. At one point I had to give up, feeling dizzy and unwell, and we decided to turn around to find easier terrain.

We don't get a lot of variety in the fall foliage, not like New England or North Western Canada. Here it's yellow, brown and some leftover green mostly, pretty all the same but nothing to write home about for the so inclined leaf peepers, except for this tree.

We certainly made best use of catching the last warming sun rays of the day, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Now that days are getting shorter (I do not have any appreciation for end of the daylight saving time, for me it could always be 'summertime'), we will be running out of opportunities for afternoon rides and warm(ish) weather. But bicycle season is far from over. I am a bit curious about how my fat tire Townie might handle snow.

Finding Serenity again

Do you know the feeling when the workplace sucks the life out of you? With the husband regularly away on business trips and myself working late I am asking myself, what the heck are we doing here.

I compared notes from ten years ago when we prepared to leave Germany. The business travels, the late hours. Didn't we want to get away from this? Now it's déjà vu all over again, and I am not amused.

Thankfully I have outlets to temporarily escape and clear my mind, even if it is just for an hour or two between rainfalls. And I remembered something I learned in my time in Canada: Take it, change it or leave it! But don't dare complain, eh!? And so, I cycled on keeping these words in my heart and mind.

Not good...
Me and the Townie
Finding serenity in a pond.

Gelassenheit

Whingeing on the highest possible Level (It's a German thing!)

Cycle path? What's that? I am going cross-country on my Townie.

During my daily exercise (Townie time, again) I was pondering about an admittedly pretty luxurious problem: Too many vacation days and not enough ideas how, when and where to spend them. In Canada it was easy: You got four weeks, thereof two were spent on family visits in Germany, leaving another two weeks for a two or four wheeled road trip (often to the States).

But this year we already went on our road trip, and also took off a few days here and there. Also, I have tentative plans of traveling to the Baltic Sea in autumn, yet I have another 12 days to squander, and that's not counting the countless statutory holidays. Suggestions, anyone...?

Bottom line: Life must be darn good, when struggling with problems like this.

At least it was dry today.
The effing hill almost had me finished off! The incline doesn't look that steep, however, I was puffed and done. Hated it.
Got rewarded with a downhill blast
(trusting the breaks were functioning properly)
Got a scenic view overlooking the village, too.
