Southern Blackforest Roadtrip - Ausflug in den Hochschwarzwald (1)

The weather forecast for last weekend was promising, and we spontaneously decided to spend the weekend in the Southern Blackforest, and stayed in a hotel in Todtnau. Although temperatures had risen in the previous week (up to 20°C) there was still snow present in the area.

This place was on my bucket list for while now, because I wanted to visit the Todtnauer Falls, at 97m the second highest waterfall in Germany (outside the Alps that is). One of the four cascades is 60m high (very high by German standards).

We arrived early and the parking lot was empty but the size of it implied that it can be quite crowded at other times. An easy path lead to the base of the falls, which was lit by the morning sun.

Then we climbed up the steep and windy but well secured trail to the upper cascades. It was quite the exercise, but we were rewarded by spectacular views on the fall and the valley below.

Finally we arrived a bit out of breath and in a break, and enjoyed the spray coming from the upper step of the falls which was quite refreshing.

On our way back we followed the path through the forest leading us back to the trailhead. A visit well worth it and highly recommended when in the area.

Harmless looking but toxic: Anemone nemorosa (wind flower, thimble weed)

  1. Nice pics of the waterfall....looks like a heck of a climb up though..

That first pic, reminds me of countless turns and curves here on the roads that traverse the Rockies....

  3. What a gorgeous waterfall. Now I know why it was on your list. And a beautiful sunny day for a hike too. About time your weather improved.

  4. I like this idea of overnight jaunts for hikes, now to ponder the maps.
