Behind the Iron Curtain - Hinter dem Eisernen Vorhang

6°C Baby, it's cold outside - Mann, ist das kalt!

Temperatures dropped to one digit numbers that night, but nothing that longjohns and sleeping bag couldn't handle. To keep the warmth generated by the auxiliary heater we left the pop top roof closed, and made our bed downstairs. Around 5 am the urge of Nature's call woke me up. I was reluctant to leave my warm cocoon but at one point I had to get over it, donned my down jacket and trotted over to the bathroom, which is located, yes you guessed right, in the basement of an uninhabited ramshackle building.

What was the the name of the nearby village again? Finsterau? Something translating into dark meadow... right! A sudden noise of rustling leaves coming from the forest startles me... It's never just the wind! Now my mind is playing all the obvious rules of "How to survive in a horror movie":
Don't go anywhere by yourself, especially when it's dark outside. - Well, I kinda have to. Nature's call, remember? Never ever go into a basement. - No luck here, of course the restrooms are located underground.  And never ever say: "I'll be right back." - Oops, failed that one already.

Long story short, I didn't even have to use the flashlight because as soon as I came in range of the motion sensors bright neon lights showed me the way. I took care of business, and went straight back to bed. I survived despite violating all the rules and got away with it... this time.

After breakfast (in the bus) we take a hike to the source of the Vltava, Czechia's longest and therefore national river and major tributary to the river Elbe.

On following the trail we touch the Czech border. No border controls, no guards, no turnpike, although there are indeed road signs prohibiting motorised vehicles, but this is due to the fact that this is a national park region on both sides of the no longer existing fence. No problem to leave or get into the country on foot or by bicycle though. A simple memorial with iron chains stands where once the iron curtain divided the East from the West. We are glad that these days are long over.

Strolling along the former border line. Today the only peril is to beware of falling branches and trees.

The spring of Vltava is - like most sources - rather unspectacular. The water draining out of the rocks gathering in a puddle before finding its way down, is basically all what you get to see.

After getting back to the camper we are ready to hit the road to the official border crossing into the Czech Republic.

Coffee Break

The contrasting scenery of the Bohemian national park doesn't fail to impress, as we meander along the path of the growing river Vltava. Finally we arrive at a campground named Paradijs (paradise) located on the river, and close to the picturesque village of Cesky Krumlov, another UNESCO world heritage site. And we won't be lost in translation because the lady manager speaks excellent German.

Die Managerin spricht übrigens perfekt Deutsch, was uns Verständnisprobleme erspart.

    1. We had one on board, Michael, but it had been stored in the back of the car, so it was either getting it out of the trunk, or just head over to the loo. I opted for the latter, and got a story to tell ;-)

  4. Hahaha - love it! It's futile trying to drift back to sleep when nature calls, then spending the next hour fighting it. I think most people recall all the horror movies they've ever seen when staying in a strange place.

    Lovely photos as always!

  5. Nice Pics! Congrats on surviving the trip to the "facilities" in spite of flouting all the horror movie rules for survival! I had to turn off the catalytic heater in the RV last night as it was too warm....then I had to stumble like five feet to the bathroom when I woke....oh the horror. :)

Neat memorial at the old Czech border. Back in the day, the division I was assigned to was the 1st Armored Division and apparently we were expected to hold back the 14 Czech Army (I think, details grow hazy as my dementia develops)....regardless, the numbers pretty much guaranteed we would have gotten run over pretty quickly....so glad it never came to pass.

I look forward to more pictures of this cool camping trip!

    1. I am glad it never came to a conflict with the Czech Army, but can freely enter and leave the country and visit each other.

For some reason I cannot get the scary part in you story, Dom ;-)

  6. Lol - it's not camping to you've done that late night walk. The one upside is the stars are amazing at that time of night if the clouds stay away.

    1. That's what I am telling myself every time, Kari. And yes, the early morning sky was stunning. No pics though as their were other more pressing matters to attend to...
