Walhalla, Trumpery or National Treasure? - Walhalla, Kitsch oder Kulturgut?

Once upon a time there was Ludwig, crown prince of Bavaria whose intention was to unify Germans  and restore their national identity after the destruction of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation by Napoleon back in the beginning of the 19th century.

So he had built this hall of fame to honour people who contributed to German culture, science, art and politics, no matter from which origin or gender. In Walhalla there shall be equality.

Inscription: "Walhalla shall be for the reinforcement and propagation of the German minds. There shall be a common fatherland to all Germans, whatever their tribe, a fatherland that they can be proud of, and everyone shall contribute as much as he can to laud it."

The views from above overlooking the river Danube and the Bavarian high plains are stunning, and the architecture although bordering on kitsch, certainly is a great place for all these statues and busts of famous persons of German (speaking) origin.

The building in its magnificence looks a bit out of place, like a movie set of sorts, or something you'd expect in Greece maybe. But we have to give credit to crown prince Ludwig, not to make it his memorial but a hall of fame to honour the people of a fragmented country.

Sophie Scholl, Einstein, Beethoven, Goethe, Kant, Copernicus, Gutenberg and many other great minds have found their eternal memorial in this hall, and rightly so.

So, it's up to anyone to decide for themselves, if this is meant to be a trumpery or a treasure.

We camp out in a village named Cham by the river Regen (the one contributing to Danube) on a campground dedicated to canoeists.

However for a small fee the friendly hosts allowed our bus on the grounds and we got to use their excellent facilities. In the evening we explored the village, had some ice-cream and headed "home" for a nightcap, before making our bed. This time we set up the bedroom "downstairs" to see if this would work, too.

  1. An interesting post - I'm very much enjoying your road trip.

Trumpery? - I had to look that word up - I thought it had something to do with "you-know-who". Learning English from a German? - shame on me!

    1. Thank you, Stuart. I am aware that the expression might be a little on the archaic side, but I was looking for a word in the headline, like treasure also beginning with the letter t, and liked the double entendre it had in store with reference to a certain he-who-must-not-be-named.

  2. Lol, almost couldn't get past that T word. The hall does seem a little out of place, but interesting to hear about it (a first for me). I love the little town best though. Charming. And the camping pics. I'm still jealous of the VW camper.

    1. Don't be jealous, Kari. we don't own it... maybe sometime later, if we really like to travel this way.

  3. Very cool "Temple", never heard of it or would have even thought such a Greek looking building was in Germany. Thanks.

The camper seems quite nice I must say....

I liked the perspective of the wikipedia picture but the one I liked best was the one of the water reflection at the camp in Cham.

  4. You two sure are seeing some beautiful sights. The little mini-bus seems just the right size for travel.

    1. And it's basically "around the corner", just a few hundred miles away from the Black Forest, Brandy. Europe - as crowded as it seems - has its good sides, and the bus seems to be the perfect means of travel for us. We are loving it.
