First a rental bus in the colours of the Canadian flag, and now a scenery resembling Canadian wilderness, eh?
Huge parts of the Bavarian forest have been made a conservation area, and this also goes for the popular tourist destination of Arber Lake, a residue of the last ice age. Located on almost 1,000m elevation it offers a scenery strongly reminding us of our other home country.
We are lucky to visit so early in the year, the parking lot is still fairly empty, also many people don't seem to take the time to take a closer look, so we have this pseudo-Canadian experience almost to ourselves. It's still a bit nippy out here, and surprisingly there are still a few snow-covered spots, so it comes in handy to have brought our windbreakers along.
One special feature of the Arber lake are so called floating mats, like in a bog the vegetation and moss is not connected to the ground and merely floating on the lake. Also the steep walls on either side of the lake made access to harvesting trees difficult, so we are surrounded by mostly primeval forest, which makes the area fairly unique in Germany.
Indeed a lovely reminiscence of Canada. We discover a wonderful small campground near Zwieselau, called Green Village, very quiet, and close to the nature reserve. The rest of the day is spent on relaxation and experimenting with the gas grill. Today, there will be sweet potatoes, peppers, corn, vegan sausage and meat ones for Roland on the menu.

The nearby wildlife refuge, which we visit the next morning intensified the 'Canada-feeling' as there were bears and moose, wildcat and other wildlife to watch. Our parking spot isn't where the big rigs and trailers are sent, we are indeed allowed to use the lot close to the entrance due to our car-sized camper.

At one point the man wants his lunch break, and so we opt for a a place serving regional cuisine. However, for some reason Roland has a craving for curry wurst and fries. I order sauerkraut soup, which is a culinary surprise.
Now we are ready to continue our journey through "Bavarian Canada".
As we had a major hike planned for the next day we find a campground (Camping Nationalpark Ost) adjacent to the hiking trail, and close to the Czech border. Elevation is 1,100m and we wonder, if this is going to be a cold night. The campground is completely empty, and the facilities have certainly seen better days, they are clean though, and the water is hot, so no complaints here. Besides, we have a spot with an electric hook-up, so we can run the auxiliary heater all night if need-be, and there is a bench and table for every camp spot. Voilà, table is laid, and dinner is served.
That looks like a great camping spot....or should I say, glamping spot?
ReplyDeleteI guess turning on the aux heater can be considered glamping, Dom. The hard core days of spending cold nights in a tent are long gone.
DeleteI epitomize glamping these days!
DeleteHey, there's nothing wrong with that ;-)
DeleteSo beautiful. It reminds me of the Manning Park area of BC.
ReplyDeleteYou two look like you are nice and relaxed too, just the way a road trip is supposed to be.
I totally agree, Brandy. If it weren't for the white road marks it could easily be Manning Park.
DeleteIt is a really beautiful area and the camping shots were a nice addition. I will be trying sauerkraut soup this week.
ReplyDeleteThe area is bit rough this early in the season but we like it that way, Richard. Will you go out to get the soup or prepare it yourself?
DeleteIt really does remind me of BC/PNW. Lovely and peaceful.
ReplyDeleteErst heute entdecke ich deine neuen Einträge. Super, diese Landschaft und die Bilder. Ihr schlaft also normalerweise oben?
Want one!
