All good things... - Alles hat einmal ein Ende.

Bastei (the bastion) in Saxon Switzerland is likely the most famous rock formation in Eastern Germany, if not all Germany, and has been a tourist magnet for over two centuries. Its jagged rock columns stand roughly two hundred meters tall overlooking the river Elbe and the Elbe valley. A sandstone bridge was built in the 19th century in order to replace a wooden construction that previously connected the rocks. On top of cliffs remnants of a medieval fortress can be found.

Die Bastei in der Sächsischen Schweiz ist wahrscheinlich die berühmteste Felsformation in Ostdeutschland, wenn nicht sogar in ganz Deutschland. Bereits seit über zwei Jahrhunderten ist dies ein Hauptanziehungspunkt für Touristen aus aller Welt. Die schroffen Felsnadeln erheben sich ca. zweihundert Meter über der Elbe und das Flusstal. Im 19. Jahrhundert ersetzte eine Sandsteinbrücke die vorherige Holzkonstruktion, die die Felsen miteinander verbunden hatte. Auch befindet sich ein mittelalterliches Felsenschloss auf seinem Gipfel.

Zum ersten Mal in diesem Urlaub fängt es an zu regnen. Die Rollerfahrer scheint das nicht zu stören, denn sie fahren enthusiastisch hupend zum Gruß an uns vorbei als ich ihnen zuwinke.

Shortly after the sky clears up again giving way to the evening sun, which puts the scenery into a spectacular lighting.

Schon kurz danach hellt es wieder auf, die Wolken brechen auf und lassen die abendlichen Sonnenstrahlen durch, welche die Landschaft in ein spektakuläres Licht tauchen.

Like all good things this journey must come to an end. Our adventure in the wild east is over. Now we got to head back to Stuttgart. At a gas station near the rental place we give our trusty companion a good interior cleanup and a fuel refill before returning it with a heavy heart. This might not be our last encounter with this camper van, because we have seriously fallen in love with the VW California.

Wie alle guten Dinge muss auch einmal diese Reise zu Ende gehen. Unser Abenteuer im wilden Osten ist vorüber und wir müssen nun zurück nach Stuttgart. An einer Tankstelle in der Nähe der Mietstation säubern wir noch das Wageninnere und tanken noch einmal, bevor wir unseren treuen Weggefährten schweren Herzens abgeben. Aber das wird sicherlich nicht die letzte Begegnung mit diesem Camper gewesen sein, denn wir haben uns ernsthaft in den VW California verliebt...
