The pressing call of nature forces me to leave the warmth of the van before the sun is up. It's frosty out there, but it's just a short run to the washroom so I don't bother getting my socks on.
Dem Ruf der Natur folgend muss ich schon vor Sonnenaufgang 'raus in die Kälte. Es liegt Bodenfrost, aber da es nur ein kurzer Weg bis zum Klo ist, laufe ich schnell in Flipflops 'rüber.
On return to the van I stop to marvel at the sights. I totally forget about the cold, and while still barefoot I grab my camera to get these snapshots. Wow!
Auf dem Rückweg traue ich meinen Augen nicht und vergesse darüber die Kälte. Immer noch barfuß greife ich meine Kamera und halte diesen Moment digital fest. Toll!
After breakfast we leave Siggi, our camper van at the campground. We are going to take the train today. Leave it to the Swiss to make for an unforgettable train ride. Beside the fact that it is actually on time all the time, the Bernina railway is also Europe's highest train crossing, a UNESCO world heritage and an awesome opportunity to go sightseeing in the area.
Nach dem Frühstück lassen wir Siggi, unseren Bus auf dem Campingplatz zurück und nehmen die Bernina Bahn. Es wird eine unvergessliche Fahrt. Natürlich kommt der Zug pünktlich am Bahnhof Morteratsch an. Man muss es den Schweizern lassen, die haben es drauf, Bahnfahren und Sightseeing zu verbinden. Die Bernina Bahn ist die höchstgelegene Pass überquerende Zugverbindung Europas, UNESCO Welterbe und eine tolle alternative Reisemethode.

The giant rock pots at Cavaglia are interesting remnants of a retreating glacier. Those vertical caves were formed by debris swirled around by the torrential floods of meltwater.
Die riesigen Felstöpfe in Cavaglia sind interessante Überbleibsel eines Gletscherrückzugs. Diese senkrechten Höhlen haben sich beim Abfluss des im Schmelzwasser mitgeführten Schutts gebildet.

Next stop of our hop on - hop off Bernina railway tour is Alp Grün. We hike up to an inn where cold drinks and hot food awaits and enjoy a prime view on Piz Palü.
Wir nehmen den nächsten Zug und steigen Alp Grün wieder aus. Von dort geht es einen steilen Pfad bergauf zu einem Gasthof, wo uns kalte Getränke und warmes Essen erwarten. Dazu genießen wir den Blick auf den Piz Palü.

Then we walk the trail back down to the train station where shortly after the Bernina tram takes us back to the campground where we get to spend the rest of the day reading and practicing il dolce far niente.
Danach laufen wir gestärkt wieder zurück zum Bahnhof, wo uns die Bernina Bahn wieder zurück nach Morteratsch bringt. Dort verbringen wir dann einen gemütlichen Nachmittag mit Lesen und il dolce far niente.

ReplyDeleteWe weren't expecting to be able to climb into the pots, but since opportunity knocked... A very interesting rock formation for those who dig geomorphology.
Deletewow, was fuer ein cooler Trip mit dem Zug. Die Ausblicke sind der Wahnsinn, aber am tollsten fand ich ja, dass man dort mit den Leitern in die Felsloecher reinklettern kann.
