Castillo de Loarre, the castle of Loarre, is one of the most important and best preserved Romanesque buildings in Spain. On their website they dare claim: perhaps even in Western Europe. We had never heard of it before but since the campground we had picked for the night was located nearby we thought it would be worth a peek.
Construction began way back in 1019 (happy 1000th birthday by the way), and it sits on the southern slope of the Pyrenees three hundred meters above the village overlooking the whole area. The structure is huge, and includes a chapel, two tombs and remains of residential buildings. A feast for the so inclined photographer.
Camping under olive trees - Campieren unter Olivenbäumen.
Interesting location. It looks like it was built in multiple stages. I like the shots with Roland. It gives some scale to things.
ReplyDeleteAnd a great camping spot among the olive trees.
Well spotted, Richard. They kept indeed adding rooms/buildings/walls over centuries beginning from the 11th until the 14th century.
DeleteBest campground so far, great facilities, and valley view and castle view included.
Love the photos, Sonja. Looks like a nice place to camp.
ReplyDeleteThanks, John. So many nice places... so little time.
