The Bay of Biscay - Am Golf von Biscaya

The Bay of Biscay is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean stretching from Galicia to Brittany along the north coast of Spain and the west coast of France. This maritime area is known for bad weather, strong winds and extreme swells. And the closer we got to the shore the worse got the weather.

There we had it. After twelve days of sunshine we finally got rained on. At least the rain wasn't cold. We thought of it as the heaven crying because our vacation had come to its end.

At the campground we waited until the worst was over, had a coffee and a nap and went for a walk along the beach (there wasn't much of it really...). But with humidity and the scent of salt in the air it felt like home for somebody with saltwater in her veins not matter the weather.

One day was left before we had to head back home by way of crossing France. It was basically a line going straight northeast. The scenery gradually changed from coastal plains to hills and forests.

We hit the highway with an overnighter at a fairly good French campground in Vichy in the volcanic region of Auvergne (beautiful indeed) and returned home reaching a total mileage of almost 5,000 km (3,100 mi).

It didn't stop raining for the next five days after we left Spain. Someone must have been extremely sad about us leaving...

  1. That was a fantastic trip, thank you for sharing.

Saltwater in your veins... Does that mean a sailboat is your next means of travel?
