And as if the weather wanted to congratulate us on our accomplishment the clouds broke up and gave way to sun and blue skies. We had arrived in France! And was sunny and dry! Suddenly our journey felt like a real vacation ;-)
On past occasions it had been a bit of a challenge to find a restaurant or cafe open on a Sunday in rural France but we were lucky enough to find a tea room offering baked goods and hot beverages. Now the occasion had come to put our language skills to use. In perfect local lingo we ordered un café noir and a croissant, s'il vous plaît.
Half way up the Grand Ballon, with 1,343m the highest mountain in the Alsace region, Roland's 2008 Vespa GTS250 i.e. , namely Bella, hit an important milestone: 10,000km. And since the Italian diva has a history of making a fuss on road trips... her headlight went al volo out of order. Porca miseria! We were glad that it was daylight.
We weren't alone on the Route de Crêtes today. Many motorists and cyclists were out there as well to enjoy the brilliant weather. Captured by the sights and scenery we forgot all about the bad weather of the past few days. This was good!
Alas, we had to cut short our trip along the apex of the Vosges mountains. Our fuel gauges were complaining, and it isn't always easy to find an open gas station on a Sunday in France either. The GPS pointed out a 24/7 pump, and by the time we got there we were riding on fumes. As we had already entered the Rhine valley we continued to roll in northeasterly direction, and herewith crossed our last border. We were back on home soil.
Roland meanwhile had developed a serious craving for ice cream, and we made a final stop at a cafe in Endingen am Kaiserstuhl before riding riding the last leg home.
Roland's choice: Pizza Ice Cream
We almost hit the 300km mark today. And it was still in the middle of the day. Technically we could have gone another 200km without flinching. The Vespas did a great job under different and partly difficult road and weather conditions, and so did we. We are ready! Italy, here we come (and may the weather be on our side, and the mountain passes be open).

Sonja:
ReplyDeleteThat ice cream Pizza looks delicious. but it's a big piece, I hope you helped.
Don't forget to carry an extra Headlight Bulb, and brake light bulb too. That way you will never have to use it. Oh, and it's easy to visually look at your front brake pads.
I notice no rain today

Bob, Roland is very protective of his ice-cream servings. I only got the fruit...
DeleteGood one, carrying the spare bulbs. It might never come to use. But for sure something else will break...
Unfortunately the light bulb trick does not work for a Vespa, because you would also have to carry 10 different tools to actually change it! I had the pleasure of changing the lightbulb last Monday, and it felt like I had to take the entire scooter apart before I could get to the bulb. We would never be able to do that on the road. Anyway, we carry one with us, maybe a garage can help if necessary.
DeleteOh my, the trips you two take!! I'm so envious......hopefully someday I'll have a chance to cross those borders on two wheels.
ReplyDeleteCoop, we are lucky indeed. The advantage of short distance. I keep my fingers crossed that you can make a trip to the old world one day, and ride those roads. You'll like it!
DeleteSonja - I am enjoying your meeting of Gary's Challenge ... look out Italy. PS That's some kind of ice-cream treat! You Go Rolland.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen, it was lovely though a bit too wet for my taste. Roland is an ice cream addict... his all time favourite is a strawberry cup, with tons of vanilla ice.
DeleteStole your Pizza pic it looks so nice.
ReplyDeleteWell, David, have fun with it but don't lick the screen.
Delete"Italy here we come". Took the words right out of my mouth! May the passes be open :)
ReplyDeleteFrom your lips to the weather god's ears. We know we can cope with the rain, but snow... I hope it will stay too warm for the white stuff to happen again but in the mountains you never know.
DeletePerfect command and use of the phrase "porca miseria"! :)
ReplyDeleteThe houses in the third picture almost look like toy houses.....cool.
Congrats on meeting Gary's challenge though to me it looked like a great diversion.
Dom, it was an awesome little round trip and perfect to test out our gear. Now we can fix the weaknesses before we get on our big journey.
DeleteWhat a great way to end the trip, sunshine and ice cream. So glad the weather cooperated for the way home.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your road report and pictures.
I am glad you enjoyed it, Brandy. We also found it a perfect ending with the sun out, and being able to sit outside.
DeleteSonja, thanks for sharing. I've had a couple of visits to the Colmar area (via Freiburg where a friend lived) and it brought back some lovely memories of Spring in that part of the world. Alas, if only I'd have my Vespa with me back then.....
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks again for writing auf Deutsch....a chance to freshen up my second language!
Dave, my pleasure. Thanks for reading, and kudos to you for reading the German part.
